Understand Your Medicare Options

Clear, simple information to help you feel confident about your Medicare coverage, what each part covers, when to enroll, and where to get help.

The Four Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into parts, each covering different services. Here's a plain-language overview.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

An "all-in-one" alternative offered by private insurers that bundles Part A and B, often with extra benefits.

Part D

Prescription Drugs

Helps cover the cost of prescription medications through private, Medicare-approved plans.

Supplemental Benefits & Grocery Allowance

Some Medicare Advantage plans may include supplemental benefits, such as an allowance that can be used toward eligible groceries and certain other everyday items. This is not a standalone government program, and it is not available to everyone.

Not for everyone

Offered by some plans only

A grocery or over-the-counter allowance is offered only by certain Medicare Advantage plans. Many plans do not include it, and it is not a benefit of Original Medicare.

Eligibility varies

Not everyone qualifies

Whether this benefit is available to you depends on the specific plan and your location. Not everyone on Medicare will qualify for a plan that offers it.

Amounts differ

Amounts can vary

When a plan does include an allowance, the amount and what it can be used for vary by plan and by area. There is no single or guaranteed amount.

A licensed insurance agent can help you check whether any Medicare Advantage plan available in your area includes this type of benefit, and review the details with you.

Key Enrollment Periods

Timing matters with Medicare. These are the windows when you can enroll or make changes.

Initial Enrollment Period

The 7-month window around your 65th birthday when you first become eligible.

Annual Election Period

October 15 to December 7 each year, when you can switch or change plans.

Special Enrollment Periods

Available after certain life events, such as moving or losing other coverage.
